Software engineers learned a long time ago that only backward, over-the-hump teams use waterfall to develop innovative software and services. They've embraced Scrum and agile methodologies as a way of life. Yet, in much of corporate America, other departments still live in the past with yearly and quarterly goals and initiatives. Enough of that. Agile thinking and execution are applicable to most disciplines. When I transitioned to marketing from product and engineering management at MobileIron in 2012, I immediately deployed Scrum to run the marketing organization with constant communication and two-week sprints and never looked back. We became incredibly responsive to the needs of the business, super transparent about activities and results, and very productive overall. A truly transformative experience.
